CHARACTER NAME: Sayaka Miki
SERIES: Puella Magi Madoka Magika
CHRONOLOGY: Episode 4 (a.k.a. before shit hits the fan)
CLASS: Hero
BACKGROUND:
Once there was a girl named Madoka who was small and weak and always picked on. Until one day, a knight in shining armor arrived and chased them away for her. That girl's name was Sayaka Miki.
Sayaka is the close friend of the titular character, Madoka Kaname, and another classmate named Hitomi. Sayaka's around 13-14 years of age, middle-class, tomboyish, and has a rather below-average performance at school. She also has a long-time crush on a violinist named Kyosuke Kamijo.
Her attraction to Kamijo started way back when they were kids and she heard him play the violin. Unfortunately, Kamijo gets into an accident that completely takes away motor ability in his hands and feet. Sayaka often visits Kamijo in the hospital and brings him classical music CDs, from the common to the hard-to-find. She pays a lot of attention to him and his happiness but she never once tries to tell him about her true feelings.
All in all, it seems like the story of a normal 14 year old going through the stages of teenager life. Until Sayaka encounters Kyubey.
The first time Sayaka meets Kyubey is when Madoka had just saved him from another classmate named Homura Akemi. At this point I suppose I should point out that Kyubey is a cute, plush-like alien and that Homura is in a cosplay uniform and trying to kill him. After some expressions of disbelief from Sayaka while they run away from Homura, Madoka and Sayaka get trapped in a weird maze.
But don't worry, someone saves them! Their rescuer is another girl in cosplay named Mami Tomoe. She has big guns and shit and doesn't afraid of anything.
After Mami saves them, she explains to them what just happened. Sayaka and Madoka got trapped inside the barrier of a Witch: an entity created by excess negative energy and that spreads disaster around the world. Witches can't be seen by normal people. However, Mami can because she's a magical girl. Magical girls like her are people who fight the Witches. Mami notes, however, that there are other magical girls like Homura who only want the rewards they get from defeated Witches.
Sayaka and Madoka can see the Witch because they have the potential to become magical girls. Kyubey then asks Sayaka and Madoka to contract with him so they can ~save the common people from evil~!
The girls would need to make one wish so their contract with Kyubey comes into effect. Both Sayaka and Madoka stall, though, because they don't know what to wish for. Mami understands this and simply asks them to join her on some of her missions so that they can understand more about what magical girls go through.
Sayaka and Madoka watch Mami save a woman marked with a Witch's Kiss (which is basically a mark that says the Witch has chosen you to be doomed in suffering. Also you will probably die). They defeat the Witch, too, and Sayaka is all like "Whoa Mami you are the coolest ever!" and begins to idolize her and stuff.
Mami is able to collect a Grief Seed from the Witch. She explains that a Soul Gem's power lessens as it's used, so magical girls need to collect Grief Seeds that Witches drop once they're destroyed. This Grief Seed sucks out the impurities from the Soul Gem and keeps it and its owner at its full power.
Sayaka visits Kamijo at the hospital to give him a rare CD. While listening to it, Kamijo begins to cry, which affects Sayaka too, knowing that she's hopeless to take his sadness away no matter what she does for him. So that night, after a battle with a Familiar (an entity split off from a Witch that also has the potential to become a Witch), Sayaka asks Mami whether she can make a wish for someone else. Mami says it's possible, but that Sayaka should seriously consider her true intentions of making such a wish because she might regret it in the end.
One day, Sayaka, Kyubey, and Madoka head to the hospital where Kamijo is staying but apparently he hasn't told Sayaka that he can't meet her today. On the way back, they encounter a Grief Seed about to hatch. Sayaka tells Madoka to head on ahead to look for Mami while she and Kyubey watch the Grief Seed (and deep inside, she's watching it because Kamijo is inside the hospital where it's near and it might harm him).
The Grief Seed hatches under Sayaka's watch, but Mami arrives with Madoka just in time. Mami tries to defeat the newborn Witch... Except she underestimates its power and her head gets eaten off. Oops?
Thankfully, Homura is around, so she defeats the Witch herself. The Witch drops a Grief Seed and Sayaka insists that Homura leave it because it's for Mami. All Homura does is slap Sayaka and tell her that the Grief Seed is hers because they only belong to magical girls. She also tells them to embed the scene into their memory because this is what it truly means to become a magical girl.
Struck by the reality, Sayaka and Madoka hesitate. Kyubey tells them that he understands and will have to look for other magical girls and bids them goodbye.
One day Sayaka brings a CD to Kamijo again, but this time his mood is a bit sour. Then, in true teenage angst style he turns on Sayaka and demands if she's trying to make him suffer because she keeps on making him listen to music he can't play anymore. She learns that the doctors have told Kamijo that it's no longer possible for him to move his hands, that he'll be a cripple forever and that only a miracle can cure him. This is when she tells him that both magic and miracles exist.
And would you look at that! Kyubey is still around, watching them! But Sayaka doesn't even notice this slightly suspicious move from Kyubey and makes a wish: she wishes for Kamijo's hand to heal.
The next time she visits him, Kamijo is overjoyed. Kamijo tells her that she's right: that magic and miracles do exist. She brings Kamijo to the hospital's rooftop where everyone's waiting for him. His violin teacher hands him his violin back, and he plays it while Sayaka watches happily, convinced that what she did was the right thing.
Sayaka's first battle asgainst a witch is when a witch controls her other friend Hitomi, as well as a few others, to basically kill themselves. She doesn't only rescue Hitomi but Madoka as well, who was trying to save Hitomi herself. This is when Madoka finds out that Sayaka has turned into a magical girl. Sayaka tells Madoka never to wish to become one herself, because from now on it's Sayaka's responsibility to protect her and the town of Mitakihara.
Unfortunately, on her way home, there's a flash of light and suddenly she's standing in a platform in what she's pretty sure isn't somewhere she's familiar with...
PERSONALITY:
Loud, impulsive, and courageous, at first appearance Sayaka is the portrait of the standard shounen manga protagonist. She's even not-so-bright and falls asleep in class and stuff! She has a firm sense of righteousness and dislikes stealing, people harming others, and anything "evil" in general. She's also protective, caring, and willing to put her life on the line for the people she cares about.
She is able to think things through if it's a very important decision. For example, she can't decide on a wish that will benefit her because she knows that her life isn't full of hardships. And because her life is okay, she doesn't think that asking for more is fair.
She thinks of herself as this heroic, selfless being, just like Mami whom she so obviously idolizes. So the very moment Kamijo snaps at Sayaka and breaks down because he's been told that it's hopeless to get back feeling and movement in his hand, she instantly wishes for Kamijo's hand to heal, believing that she's really doing a selfless act when deep inside, she's doing this for herself (more on that later).
She tells Madoka that she doesn't regret her decision, either, because she really believes that she did the right thing in healing Kamijo's hand and becoming a magical girl. Her only regret is that she didn't make her wish earlier so she could fight alongside Mami. She might have prevented Mami's death that way. She's scared of fighting, of course, though she tries to overcome it, and is well-aware that she could die in battle but thinks that it's better than to see her friends come to harm. Basically, this is the point where I'm taking her from, but her issues lay deeper than that and it becomes more apparent in the episodes after.
So there's this girl named Kyoko, whom Sayaka encounters. Kyoko lets Familiars attack people so they become Witches in order for her to harvest their Grief Seeds. This is obviously not okay for Sayaka, because it could mean harming the people she loves. She gets into a fight to the death with Kyoko that is broken off by Homura. After this incident, she tells Madoka that she's prepared to fight to the death if it means protecting the people she loves.
The reality, though, is that Sayaka doesn't really like herself: A flawed girl with her own selfish desires and who can't fix everything. So her selflessness is more of something she forces upon herself because she's built up such a grand notion of who she wants to be. She wants to be a noble, perfect knight in shining armor who lives for others.
That's why she's so affected when Kamijo snaps at her; she realizes that she's helpless and worthless in some situations and refuses to accept that she's that kind of person. She would rather make a wish and face the consequences of becoming a strong magical girl who everyone relies on, then accept that she's just a normal girl because she's so disgusted with who she really is.
But Kyoko can see right through this insecurity. In fact, Kyoko tells Sayaka directly that it would be better if Sayaka cut off Kamijo's limbs because then he would need to rely completely on her and he wouldn't escape her. This pisses Sayaka off because she didn't become a magical girl for her own selfish reasons, dammit (note: she totally did)! She also hates being pushed aside as if she isn't powerful enough, as evidenced by her anger when Homura and Kyoko prepare to fight each other and completely ignore that she's there, too.
When she learns that she's trapped in the Soul Gem and her body is only a puppet, she understandably gets upset, but her righteousness is still undeterred. She even tells Kyoko that she will continue to fight in her own way, to never act for her own benefit, and to always shield the people from the witches. She claims that she still doesn't regret her wish to heal Kamijo's hands. Also, she thinks that even if she doesn't get acknowledged, it's fine because she's doing the right thing!
But then Kamijo and Hitomi hook up, and she accuses Hitomi of stealing Kamijo away from her and even thinking of maybe not saving Hitomi at all. She also snaps at Madoka and tells her that Madoka can never understand her, because Madoka has all the potential to become the most powerful magical girl yet she does nothing. This way of thinking, of course, horrifies her, because she's supposed to be the defender of justice! How dare she be harbor such selfish thoughts and hurt the very people she swore to protect!
She completely snaps when she overhears two men talking crap about their girlfriends. She wonders if there's something left worth protecting in this world and only then realizes what she's been really doing the whole time: that she vowed to protect the ones she loves, but instead began to harbor feelings of resentment and envy towards them. She's selfish and imperfect, and that's not okay because that's not who she's supposed to be! Her appalling discovery that she will never become the ideal, perfect person she wants to be, and her refusal to accept that she's imperfect and that's okay, completely breaks her. She tells Kyoko that she feels like a fool and not worthy of being a magical girl. This is when she breaks and transforms into the witch Oktavia.
It's curious to note that the barrier of her witch form, Oktavia, has posters filled with rune messages that say "Look at me", and there's a lyric from the Beatles's song too, that says "Love me do". It could mean that her true wish is for Kamijo to acknowledge her.
Also, in other timelines, if Sayaka makes a contract to become a magical girl, she always ends up becoming a Witch.
After Madoka basically becomes Jesus, Sayaka is still the only one not brought back. This is because Madoka doesn't want to negate the sacrifice and hardships Sayaka had to undergo to heal Kamijo's hand. Sayaka seems way more accepting here. She even admits that she's a bit jealous that Hitomi's ended up with Kamijo, that she thinks Hitomi's too good for him but certain that Hitomi will make him happy, anyway. It could be that she's come to terms with herself in the end.
POWER:
[POWER SLOT 1: MAGICAL GIRL/PUELLA MAGI]
A magical girl's powers come from their Soul Gem, which is actually more than just a cute, little magical ornament they carry around with them. A Soul Gem is actually them, and a magical girl's body is just a husk. So Sayaka's body can't exist without her Soul Gem, and vise versa!
Her Soul Gem also contains the standard magical girl abilities. They are:
1. Obligatory transformation sequence: Sayaka can transform at will into her standard magical girl clothing. Hers is a blue armor without sleeves and an asymmetrical skirt for greater mobility, with her Soul Gem pinned to her navel. She also gets to have an awesome cape because she can.
Her Soul Gem can also transform. The first form is her ring, and this is how she keeps it when not in use. The second form is the egg-like gem, which can help her track Witches and Familiars and is all glowing and whoa. The third form is the "C" form on her navel when she's in her battle armor.
A magical girl's Soul Gem slowly gets corrupted with use. In her own world, she would need to collect Grief Seeds to remove the impurities from her Soul Gem. In the city, I will assume that the corruption will just be frozen in time (since there are no Grief Seeds here to purify it). She will, however, still feel the exhaustion and fatigue that would normally happen as a result of exerting her powers.
More information on what happens when a Soul Gem is completely corrupted is in number 5.
2. Increased physical abilities: she is stronger, more flexible, and generally more athletic than the average human. Not exceedingly so, though! It's just enough for her to be able to wield a sword and dodge enemies and throw her sword at them with enough strength and accuracy to actually hit them. And also do somersaults in mid-air and all those acrobatic things.
3. Combat powers and shit: Each magical girl has their own special weapon to fight Witches, and Sayaka's is a sword. She can also summon multiple swords to throw at the opponent, but this will deplete her energy drastically (For example, she could get away with summoning multiple swords once per battle, but more than that and she'd probably lose consciousness or something).
4. Increased bodily defense: Because her body is just a husk controlled by her/her Soul Gem, Sayaka is capable of withstanding more damage than normal humans. She still feels pain, though, and is nowhere near invincible! Any kind of fatal damage will cause her to die and her Soul Gem to shatter.
In reverse, since her Soul Gem is her, any pressure or damage to the Soul Gem (even just applying slight force to it!) will send her into excruciating pain. And yes, it is also possible to kill her by crushing her Soul Gem, or keeping her Soul Gem more than 100 meters away from her body for more than 48 hours. If her Soul Gem isn't returned to her within 48 hours, then she would lose the connection to her body and her body would simply decompose.
Basically just target her Soul Gem (which is especially easy to do when she's in her magical girl form; it's a huge blue gem located in her navel) and she's a goner.
5. Potential to turn into a Witch: In her canon, a magical girl becomes a Witch when her Soul Gem is completely corrupted, but she can still also become a Witch with enough ~suffering and despair~ to push her over the edge. The Soul Gem transforms into a Grief Seed, and the girl into a Witch. All Soul Gems have the inherent trait to transform into Grief Seeds, since Kyubey's main purpose for turning girls into magical ones in the first place is so that they can eventually "mature" into Witches. Once Sayaka becomes a Witch, she cannot turn back into a magical/normal girl. This basically means that I will not turn her into one out of nowhere unless it's part of a bigger plot.
[POWER SLOT 2: SELF-HEALING]
The nature of Sayaka's wish is healing, so her special magical girl ability is the ability to regenerate wounds faster than her other magical girl counterparts. From what's been implied in her first battle with Kyoko, she can heal wounds in a couple of seconds. Pretty, circular markers with notes in them appear on the areas she's healing!
But again, if she's dealt a fatal wound (stabbed through the heart, caught in an explosion, beheaded, what have you), then she will still die.
[POWER SLOT 3: N/A]

COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE:
[A blue-haired girl has her closed hand to her mouth as she clears her throat.]
Okay, right.
[She says this more to herself than anything, and there's the slightest hint of hesitation in her voice. It's quickly gone, though, as she stares straight at the camera and to whoever's watching her right now, her expression firm and determined.]
So! Hi. I'm Sayaka Miki, from Mitakihara Town in Japan. It's cool being called out here to become a hero and all, but I really, really need to get back to my hometown, so if anyone knows how I could do that then it would be great if they could tell me.
Besides, it's just not right trying to randomly drag people away from their homes without asking permission! And isn't this technically called kidnapping? This is considered a felony, you know!
[A small cough before she continues.] So, yeah. I'd be grateful for any help at all. It's really important that I get back at all costs! Thanks!
LOGS POST (PROSE) SAMPLE:
She twitches, opens her eyes, and finds herself staring back at printed letters on a glossy page.
"Welcome to..." The words barely register but she slides the brochure with one hand anyway, so she can read the rest of the sentence with her cheek still pressed against the table, "...the City, Hero."
Welcome to the City, Hero.
The City. Hero.
Oh, crap!
She jolts awake, almost knocking off the brochure from the table in the process. Her dog tags, which she wears around her neck, clink against the table's edge.
She hastily collects her thoughts. She remembers being beamed up here all of a sudden and the lady-voice welcoming her as a hero; her Soul Gem not reacting, making her conclude that there are no Witches or Familiars around her and that she isn't trapped in one of their barriers; and her shouting and questioning and demanding to just be taken back already because she doesn't belong here, dammit, surely this must be some kind of mistake! All of these were to no avail. It pisses her off that she's being ignored like this, and maybe she hates herself a bit too for being caught off-guard, or whatever, but she remembers that she's a magical girl and that a magical girl must do something about it. She then recalls walking around and screaming for Madoka or Hitomi while heading towards the hospital. Of course, once there she immediately asks for a Kyosuke Kamijo. She worries after learning that no one with such a name has been checked in, because then how would she know he's alright? How is she supposed to protect him, be there for him?
It's only after the hospital visit that she had even considered flipping through the brochure. She had read it for about ten minutes before the words had knocked her unconscious.
She must still have been tired from that last battle with the witch. Also, it's reading. But this is no good; clearly she has to work harder! Resolved to stay awake this time, she flips through the rest of the pages, scanning through what looks like important details.
Nuclear crisis... Attacks by the undead... Super Villains...
"What the heck?!" she exclaims, then scratches the back of her head and hastily apologizes to the surprised passerby's, complete with a sheepish grin on her face.
Okay. Okay, Sayaka. Get yourself together. She slaps her hands against both cheeks to keep herself focused. So she's in this new place because she's a hero and the city apparently needs several of them terribly. A few days ago she wouldn't even believe anything like this could happen, but hey, if things like magical girls and witches and wishes coming true could exist, then she should be used to strange occurrences by now, right?
Besides, the lady-voice had called her a hero... And she kind of liked it.
She props an elbow on the table and stares at the ring on her finger, watching the compact, blue Soul Gem refract the light from the setting sun. Being called a hero is neat and all, but she must try to think things through when it comes to making an important decision, just like what Mami told her. So she does think: She reminds herself that she got her powers from Kyubey because of a wish. And now she has these powers to fight witches trying to attack helpless people. People like her loved ones. Like the boy she gave her wish for. These are the people who rely on her to protect them.
And they're not here.
She wonders whether there's another hero like her who has found a way out because the brochure clearly isn't telling her anything, and she needs to get back home soon. Homura can't really be trusted with her town, and Mami is gone...
Something claws at her heart as she thinks of her upperclassman's sudden death. Part of it is the guilt she feels for not deciding to become a magical girl sooner, because if she had then maybe Mami wouldn't have died, and then she could still continue to guide her, and then she wouldn't feel so afraid.
Because now, all alone and with absolutely no idea of what to do, she's so terribly afraid.
She vigorously shakes her head, thinking that if Mami knew her thoughts then Mami would be so disappointed in her. What kind of a magical girl is she if she's scared of such a simple setback? That's not right at all; she can't possibly be like that!
She stands up so suddenly her chair topples over.
"Oops!" She bends over to heave it back up when the communicator falls off her pocket. She picks it up.
Oh. She could use this to contact other people. Now why didn't she think of that earlier?
She flips open the device and she's certain that she's not going to stop asking until she finds someone or something that can get her back home. After all, she didn't become a magical girl just to get kidnapped to a place where she couldn't protect the ones she loved. She's the protector of Mitakihara. If she fights then she fights for Kamijo, and Madoka, and all the people she cares about, and if she needs to fight to get back home then so be it. She will fight anything and anyone that puts her loved ones in harms way.
Because a magical girl is someone who protects the people from the evils they can't see.
And she has to become the great kind of magical girl.
FINAL NOTES:
Just in case anyone's wondering about Power Slot 1! It looks like a lot of abilities, but I don't think it makes her overpowered. Basically, it just means that it makes her very, very athletic and capable of changing clothes in like 10 seconds tops, with the added bonus of her being doomed to have a bad end (that may or may not happen within the game, anyway).

[POWER SLOT 3: N/A]
[CHARACTER SAMPLES]
